Plastic Free Markets

Waste Free NT's very first project - tacking single use plastic at our local markets!

Since mid 2017, we've had an active presence at some of the markets around Darwin, encouraging market-goers to bring their own containers, cups and cutlery. We've loved meeting people who have brought their own containers for years, and encouraging those that hadn't thought to do it before. To kick things off, we have forks available for anyone to borrow, just return them and we'll wash them. And since 2018, we've also started selling bamboo cutlery, reusable cups and stainless steel + bamboo straws.

In order to get some benchmark statistics, a group of Waste Free NT volunteers sorted, counted and weighed all waste streams from one Parap Village Market event.
